Design Practice

I’ve been amazed at how often those outside the discipline of design assume that what designers do is decoration. Good design is problem solving.

Jeffery Veen, 2000

Though anyone can and should engage in design thinking, there will be a time when you engage in design practice. Typically design practice begins when it is time to make ideas tangible. This could be a concept drawing, or a rough prototype of an idea. You may want an expert on sustainability to consult how the materials, processing and useful life of your product or service will do the least harm to the environment.

The good news is that you did your due diligence during the design thinking phase, and whether you worked alongside a designer or not, you’ll have rich insights backing up the opportunities you are looking to explore.

Design is directed toward human beings. To design is to solve human problems by identifying them and executing the best solution.

Ivan Chermayeff
